Is Slip Your Friend?

Until a few years ago, many of us could count the number of times we read the ingredients found in our hair products. We took for granted the benefits of their instant results which to be honest helped a lot with manageability and styling. For women of color, hair manageability is a big deal because nobody wants to spend hours wrestling with their hair. Products that gave our hair the most “slip” became the rave because they made detangling our kinks and coils a lot easier. But what is slip? And is it really good for us long term?

“Slip” is the ease of combing or running your fingers through your hair. This is achieved with silicone-enhanced products, especially conditioners. Though silicone has a long list of benefits when it comes to hair manageability, there is one major downside that can truly affect hair health. Over time, silicone can also build up on your hair, resulting in a dry feel and dull appearance. You may even notice that your hair becomes weaker and more prone to breakage.

Now that you know the side effects of silicone-induced “slip”, here are 5 ways to achieve its benefits naturally!

1. Water is the OG for slip. Using water either with a spray bottle or while in the

shower is the best way to get the detangling effects you desire. Water helps to hydrate your hair shaft, making it more pliable.

2. Add a little honey! Honey mixed with water is extremely slippery. The same effect

happens when you add it to your conditioner. Honey is also a natural humectant which draws moisture from the environment. With honey, you not only get slip but intense moisture.

3. Use olive oil or sweet almond oil. Both oils are high in oleic acid which is a fatty acid

known for making the hair softer and easier to manage. When you add oil with high oleic acid in it, you will increase the slip properties that you want.

4. Use intense moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. Studies prove that moisturized hair is easier to detangle and style. Our shampoos and conditioners contain moisturizing properties that will hydrate your hair shaft.

5. Make sure to moisturize your hair daily. Moisturizer is your best friend when it

comes to training your hair to be more manageable.
