5 Reasons for Excessive Hair Shedding

On average our hair sheds between 50 to 100 hairs a day. When wearing protective hair styles such as braids, twists and updo’s it is normal to see an excessive amount of hair shed once you decide to remove your hairstyle. There is no need to be alarmed when this happens. You have been holding on to those shed hairs in the protective style.

However, when you are wearing your hair out and notice shedding all over your room, bathroom and even in the car, you need to pause and take stock of what’s going on. Excessive hair shedding can come from medical illnesses such as alopecia, iron deficiencies and a variety of other health issues. If you suspect you may have one of these ailments, schedule an appointment as soon as possible with your physician. If you already know you don’t have a health issue related to your hair loss, it may be from one of these 5 reasons.

1. You might just be stressed.

Stress can be a huge cause of hair loss. Hair loss due to stress is called Telogen Effluvium. When you are losing your hair due to stress it tends to come out in clumps. It is easy to say stop being stressed but much harder to do. When you feel stressed about a situation, ask yourself, what do I have control over? There are many situations in life you do not control, but you often contribute to them. I cannot control the rain, but I can control my clothing. I cannot control your feelings, but I can control my kindness. I cannot control my opponent, but I can control my response. You cannot control most outcomes in life, but you can usually influence them. Releasing your attachment to the results does not mean releasing your responsibility of the situation.

2. Excessive styling.

We all know the golden rule! The less manipulation, the better for our hair. However, many of us love to play in our hair and with so many great hairstyles out there, it is hard not to. Studies have shown that by styling too much, you can cause hair loss so you want to be careful. it is imperative to stay away from heat styling tools on a regular basis but you also want to avoid excessively braiding and unbraiding your hair or putting it in high manipulative styles often.

3. Using the wrong products.

All hair products are not created equal. Using shampoos and conditioners with sulfates and parabens can lead to the hair becoming dry and shedding. Look for products that are free of harmful chemicals and enriched with ingredients that will help moisturize and nourish the hair.

4. You are what you eat. How’s your diet?

When you are feeding your body junk in excess, not only can it cause your hair to appear dry and dull, it also can cause hair loss. Altering your diet to include more vitamins and minerals will assist your hair into growing, and you will experience less excessive shedding.

5. Lack of Protective Styling

It is so important to keep your hair protected to help prevent excessive shedding. If you constantly wear your hair out and don’t keep it well moisturized, your hair is going to become dry and brittle and eventually break off which can be in excess. Be sure that you are keeping your hair protected not only during the day but at night, by sleeping on a silk pillow case, or wearing a silk or satin bonnet.
